Generosity / a place for people

How can I give to UAMEZ Church?

Your generosity makes room for someone to belong.

When you give to UAMEZ Church, you help a historically Black, multicultural church in Palo Alto keep its doors open for anyone looking for people who actually show up. Gen Z and students far from home, and families finding their footing, walk in lonely and leave known.

A word about generosity

Why do I give to this church?

A word from Pastor Kaloma

I will say the part pastors are sometimes shy to say. My family and I give here, and we tithe here, because we believe in what God is doing in this place. I would not ask you to do anything I have not already done myself.

Paul wrote, “Each of you must give as you have made up your mind, not regretfully or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver.” (2 Corinthians 9:7, NRSVue) That is the whole spirit of this page. Make up your mind. Then give from there.

The life we share

Where does my gift go?

Your gift funds people. Here's where it goes.

01 / AMAZING KIDS

Is there a place for children?

Little Lambs is kindergarten through 2nd grade, Promised Kids is 3rd through 6th. They make things and learn Bible stories with their hands. Your gift pays for the curriculum, the supplies, the background checks, and the counter in the courtyard where a nervous parent gets walked through check in the first time.

02 / SMALL GROUPS

Is there room to be known?

Sunday is good. But an hour in a row of chairs is not where most people get known. Your gift keeps those rooms open and those leaders trained.

03 / FAMILIES

Is there a place for families?

This is a church with a lot of families and kids in the room, and we build for them on purpose. The Little House across the courtyard is intended to give parents and babies space during worship.

04 / GEN Z, YOUNG ADULTS AND STUDENTS

What about people far from home?

Palo Alto is full of people in their twenties who are far from home and surrounded by strangers. Students find people here who learn their name. Your gift supports the rooms and leaders that help people be known, including a young-adult group on Wednesdays at 7:30 PM.

05 / SUNDAY WORSHIP

What about worship, music, and prayer?

We open with gospel music, the whole room sings, and prayer is where we get honest. Your gift supports the musicians, the sound, and the livestream that carries the service beyond the room.

06 / CARE FOR OUR NEIGHBORS

How do we show up for neighbors?

When a neighbor has an emergency need, people in this church meet it. When someone asks for prayer, member or not, people in this church pray, and keep praying.

07 / FOSTER CHILDREN

How do we stand with children?

For years this church has been deeply invested in the needs of foster children in our county, the kids who most need someone to show up. Your gift supports that commitment.

08 / STEWART CHAPEL

How do we stand with a sister congregation?

We stand with our sister congregation, Stewart Chapel AME Zion Church in Redwood City, as its new pastor, Rev. Christopher Gilliam, leads it into a new season. Contact the church for current ways to support its work.

09 / CLEAN ENERGY HUB

How does the building serve the block?

The UAMEZ Clean Energy Hub plans include rooftop solar, public EV charging on Middlefield Road, and a battery microgrid that could keep this building powered for our neighbors when the grid goes down. Read the campus plans for more.

10 / OUR HOME

Is there a place for the next person?

This church has been in Palo Alto since 1918 and at 3549 Middlefield Rd since 1965. Your gift supports keeping this church home open for the next person who needs it.

A generous life

How do I grow as a giver?

Everyone starts somewhere. Take the next step, not the last one.

01 / START

How do I give my first gift?

Any amount. If this is your first time giving to a church, start here and nowhere else.

02 / BUILD A PRACTICE

Can I make it recurring?

Faithful people show up every week, and recurring giving lets your generosity do the same. Your gift is most powerful when it is predictable, not when it is big. You can set up recurring giving through Overflow. The giving form opens in a new tab.

03 / GROW

What does it mean to become a tither?

A tithe means a tenth. For those of us who call UAMEZ Church home, tithing is how we put God first with our finances instead of last. It is not a rule we enforce. It is a practice we invite you into. If you have never tithed, do not start by feeling guilty. Start by giving something, then grow toward a tenth. Scripture says, “Bring the full tithe into the storehouse, so that there may be food in my house, and thus put me to the test, says the Lord of hosts; see if I will not open the windows of heaven for you and pour down for you an overflowing blessing.” (Malachi 3:10, NRSVue)

04 / REFLECT

Can I give what I own, not only what I earn?

Many people in Silicon Valley hold more in stock than in cash. So here is a question worth sitting with. What would you give if it did not come out of the grocery money, the rent, or the childcare budget? What if it came from the overflow, the part of your portfolio that has grown while you were not looking? This is a reflection on generosity, not instructions for a stock or donor-advised-fund transfer. Use the stock or donor-advised-fund links above for instructions on Overflow.

A few questions

What else do people ask before they give?

People give freely, not under pressure. You are welcome here whether or not you give.

THE BASICS

Do I have to give?

No. No one expects it. If you’d like to give, you can, and if not, just let it pass. Tithing is a practice we invite members into, not a requirement for anyone.

WHERE IT GOES

Can I give to a specific ministry?

Gifts normally go to one general fund, which pays for Amazing Kids, small groups, Sunday worship, care for our neighbors, and the building. Open Hands, our year-end offering, supports the whole church, including our operating budget.

Scripture and generosity

What does the Bible say about giving?

However you come

What if I'm not ready to give?

We are not asking for a specific amount. Pray about what God is inviting you to give, and give from there. However you give, thank you. You belong here.
